“California Declares War on Suburbia” by Wendell Cox is an article about what is happening in California, but could happen anywhere, including New Jersey. As a result of two California laws, The Global Warming Solutions Act and The Sustainable Communities and Climate Protection Act, metropolitan areas in California are adopting plans that will require most new housing to be built at 20 or more to the acre. That is the “pack and stack” housing that some people who attended the State Strategic Plan: New Jersey’s State Development &; Redevelopment Plan meetings spoke of with trepidation. In an effort to move people away from single family homes, better known in Sustainability circles as “sprawl,” and their dependency on automobiles, new home owners will be offered housing near transportation hubs where supposedly their carbon footprint will be reduced. This housing will not be more affordable and will not solve the traffic problems in California, but does anyone really care as long as it’s “Sustainable?”
